[Hidden-tech] recommendation - imovie for El Capitan?

Hi everyone,

Seeking iMovie equivalent free software, low res fine, to create youtube
video, w/ file storage to external drive.

Older Macbook Air running El Capitan.
My research shows iMovie may not fully function w/ this OS. If it does
work, that's good to know too.

Ideas?
