Shel,

I come at this from a few angles.

If you know and like Macs - I'd stick there -- my wife is our mac person
and she just got a New macbook pro (model 1398)
moved up to 15 inch screen with OUT the touch bar (all reports agree
with earlier comment - not a good idea)
Works great for her -- lots of basic photo editing, email, documents and
blogging.
Forget MS office - go with Libre Office until you really need exact
compatibility - you might
LO does pretty good for interchange able documents
One suggestion, clean your old machine before using the transfer program
-- it does a good job BUT takes a long time and moves EVERYTHING -- also
do not use the network, way too slow - get a direct cable.

As for moving to PC world - lots of differences -- lots to move to new
programs

if you got that way, I second Lenovo - I'm on my 2nd (or it 3rd) anyway,
had mostly very good luck with all models we've had 5-6 since they spun
off from IBM, only one had issues, my daughter had with one unit that
was a bit of a lemon, had issues with mike feedback for recordings.
Get on the Lenovo mailing list and you get plenty of discount offers.
Rt button drive lots of other menus - like ctl-click or 2 finger (or sum
such) on the mac

as for videos -- check out Handbrake and openshot -- but I'll leave more
detailed video comments to others

As for chomebook - really doesn't work as a base unit - way to network
depended -- great as a 2nd machine esp since so cheap.

That's my 2 cents -- good luck
