I don't have HughesNet (Satellite Internet is not an option where I live), but
a thread like this has gone though the local Wendell Townsfolk list. HughesNet
is better than dialup and not really much better than Verizon DSL and
(obviously) worse than Cable Internet. I suspect that most of the "bad"
reviews are from ex DSL and Cable users (why someone would toss cable in favor
of HughesNet is beyond me, except the Cable companies have rotten customer
service, as does Verizon DSL, probably because as "monopolies" they have to
reason to have good customer service -- HughesNet customer service is not
necessarily any better).

Satellite Internet has two main drawbacks:

1) Latency (due to the high geosyncronious orbit). This makes Satellite
Internet problematical for video conferencing and VPN use.

2) Weather can cause signal problems. A dish full of snow becomes
non-functional (until scooped out). :-)

Also: if there is a hill/mountain or a forest (or both) blocking your
southwestern horizon, you might be out of luck.

Bad as Verizon DSL is, it *might* be better than Satellite Internet. *Wendell*
has no DSL option, so the choices in Wendell are Wild Blue or HughesNet,
unless you live within 1/2 mile of the center (and use the fixed wireless) or
can get a cell signal and use a MiFi (Celluar HotSpot). Of if nothing else
works, dialup. Yes, really there are people *still* on dialup and *I* am one
of the nobodies that is still using dialup. "Nobody still uses dialup."

Oh, Satellite Internet also has a data cap. Hit your monthly or daily limit
and you are dead in the water. This can be avoided if you only do downloads
at like 2am.

I have not tried PHPStorm. I’ve struggled through a few projects where I had to use Eclipse, and don’t want to do that again.
