Thanks so much for several good answers, that are in line with each other.

I only had drop box and google drive as start up apps, but turned those off, and will see if that helps (lots on google drive)

Just got pricing from yes computing to change to 500 gb ssd – the guy on the phone said a mid 2011 desktop was about the oldest machine it still made sense to do this on, but I’m not in need of a new computer, if this will do the job

$288 installed
$60 to transfer data
$348 total

will also get stuff off my desktop.

Thanks!!

Ira Bryck

Sounds like ram is not your bottleneck!

Is the hard drive also mid-2011?

The most impactful things I would recommend for startup speed (I recently did this for a mid-2009 MBP) would be:

1) Replace your boot drive with an SSD. Could still use the old drive for mass storage if necessary and it shouldn't affect startup speeds noticeably.
2) Manage your startup apps and remove ones you don't need right on start: http://www.wikigain.com/stop-macos-sierra-startup-apps/

Cheers,

Eli

Hello,

I have a mid 2011 mac desktop with 12 gb of ram, and less than half of the 500 gb of storage used, running Sierra 10.12.3 that runs fine, except takes FOREVER to get going when I restart.

What program might I run, or what else would you suggest I do, to clean up, speed up, etc?

Thanks
