[Hidden-tech] Hiring: Technical Director for Digital Services Agency

Common Media <http://commonmedia.com> seeks to hire a Technical Director to
join our 20-person, award-winning digital services agency in Hadley,
Massachusetts. We specialize in custom-built, open-source content
management and digital repository solutions for universities, corporations
and government agencies.

Our Technical Director reports directly to our CEO, and sits as a peer to
our Director of Operations on our Leadership Team. Our three Lead
Developers report directly to our Technical Director, with remaining
technical staff reporting to their respective Lead Developer.

We are not a strictly Agile agency, but do utilize aspects of the
discipline when applicable.

Primary responsibilities will include:

   -

   Technical Leadership
   -

      Defining overall technical direction for the company and ensuring
      process adoption.
      -

      Maintaining an active knowledge of the latest relevant tools, trends
      and technologies as opportunities for innovation and excellence.
      -

         Ensuring that team members are aware of relevant emerging
         technologies.
         -

         Considering and evaluating applicable technologies for adoption
         into standard practice and/or for specific projects.
         -

      Willingness and desire to be presented with (and to solve) the most
      difficult technical challenges that arise across all project teams.
      -

   Software Architecture
   -

      Requirements-gathering and analysis in a confidence-inspiring,
      client-facing capacity.
      -

      Defining technical strategy in conjunction with individual project
      teams: tools, approach, resource allocation, and implementation planning.
      -

      Overseeing technical documentation for correctness and completeness.
      -

      Assessing technical risk and preparing mitigation plans as necessary.
      -

      Revising approach and implementation plans as circumstances require.
      -

   Team Building + Mentoring
   -

      Evaluating development teams and team members: identifying strengths,
      problem areas, and developing plans for improving performance
and expanding
      expertise.
      -

      Evaluating future candidates for technical positions.
      -

   Company Leadership
   -

      Contributing to strategic planning processes
      -

      Helping set policy to grow the company, reduce risk, and improve
      process.
      -

      Participating in new business pitch meetings and other business
      development activity.

Valued skills and attributes:

   -

   5+ years of experience in a digital, creative or advertising agency in a
   senior technical role, preferably as Software Architect, Lead Developer or
   Technical Director
   -

   Must have a familiarity with best practices across CMS and Application
   Framework technologies such as Drupal, WordPress, React.js, Ruby on Rails
   and/or Ember
   -

   Advanced ability to analyze business requirements to determine and
   assess feasibility, options, and risk
   -

   A healthy respect for and knowledge of core software engineering
   principles
   -

   Ability to consider edge cases and write or thoroughly evaluate an
   implementation plan
   -

   An earnest belief in the need to write good code for the sake of writing
   good code
   -

   Ability (and eagerness) to keep up with the latest trends and learn new
   skills on the job
   -

   Comfort working on the command line, especially in Mac and Linux
   environments
   -

      Familiarity and dexterity with Systems Administration and DevOps is
      required
      -

   Attention to detail and production schedules
   -

   Ability to contribute positively in a team environment
   -

   Ability to maintain a busy work schedule in a collaborative work
   environment
