[Hidden-tech] Should I trust this SEO information? Or how can I verify it?

Hi Shel,

These days, only about 1/3—and the last 1/3--of SEO consists of keyword research and SEO writing, and the rest is technical and CMS-SEO. My firm's proposals on that former 1/3 include the following language:

Outside of tools that cost north of $1000 per month, keyword research tools, including Google's, have major weaknesses in the crucial data on web-wide search frequency of longer, more specific and thus more highly converting phrases (or “long tail” phrases). Most of the tools that most SEO firms use merely repackage Google’s data. Google provides poor data on the long tail in part because Google wants businesses to spend money bidding on shorter, more expensive phrases in their AdWords pay-per-click advertising in order to discover the less expensive long-tail phrases. One must know how to compensate for this and other weaknesses in the tools. DISC blends data from various tools to compensate for the weaknesses of any one. Contrary to popular misconception, PPC and Google Analytics, though very helpful in SEO keyword research, are far from sufficient.

Because of the difficulty/cost of doing good keyword research, I don’t often do it these days, as most businesses have more cost-effective web marketing tasks they can do. Coincidentally, A few weeks ago I completed such a job for a social change company, in this case a big international agency. Those numbers you got are wrong and worthless. Either a mistake was made with a tool, or an especially poor tool was used.

That all said, for a quick check of shorter phrases, Google KeyWord Planner tool is good. Bing’s free keyword research tool is pretty good too.

Best Regards,

I said with those kinds of numbers, I could not justify spending *anything* on SEO, since the percentage clicking through and then the percentage who converted to clients would be infinitesimal. He asked me for some more search terms. Conveniently, all the new phrases ranged from 956 to 5600 searches per month. He says the info came straight from Google but I'm suspicious. It doesn't make a lot of sense to me that "social change companies" gets only 20 searches per month, while the even more long-tail "social change profitability consulting" gets 2221 searches and "successful social entrepreneurs" gets 4020.
