David,

My office  (Green Earth Computers) in Northampton does hard drive recycling
for $10/drive.  We take the drives to a secure recycling center that puts
the drive through a metal shredder and melts down the metals and plastics
for reclamation.

Feel free to swing by if you want a hand with recycling.
