Had that problem but switched to Outlook which is a fantastic iOS mail client for gmail.
Microsoft acquired the mail client app and just slapped their logo on it.

As far as I can tell, GMail thinks the entire content of the message is a forwarded quote from another message and hides it.  The culprit is probably some sort of formatting toward the top of list messages.
I certainly read this list far less as a result.  Yes, there are workarounds, but it's probably a very small tweak on the list server side to make it work right.
