[Hidden-tech] prices of domains

My suspicion is that domain repurchasing works a lot like buying and
selling a house: it depends on what the seller is willing to accept and the
buyer is willing to pay. Given that domains are plentiful the value of any
particular domain name is probably pretty small. In unusual cases there may
be something marketable about a name. gm.com if not owned by General Motors
would probably be quite valuable. But justanotherwebsite.com, probably not.

It might be useful to see what other domains a person owns. While of course
names and email addresses used to claim domains may vary, and the actual
owners of a domain may be hidden by a proxy, there are tools to let you
enter a name or email address and see what domains are owned, such as this
one:

http://viewdns.info/reversewhois/

If they have lots of domains and the content on these domains looks
vibrant, interesting, fresh and unique it may suggest they are
professionals so it might not be unreasonable to ask for a higher asking
price.

It might be useful to take the unique words in the domain and run them
through Google and see what related sites come up.

Ultimately it's the content on the domain, not its name, that is important.
Who would think that tumblr.com would have any special significance?

I suspect there are people on this list with SEO expertise who could offer
a better opinion.
