The Assistant Director of Operations for the Center for Data Science directs and organizes programs, policies, data, systems and computational tools, as determined by the Director and Executive Director, in support of the Center for Data Science. This position is responsible for overall operational requirements of the Center, including substantial direct contact with many external parties, and implementation of data and software systems in support of the Center.
The Assistant Director will have the following responsibilities:
Database design and maintenance: Create, manage and maintain multiple large online databases for the Center, including publications (ensuring accurate acknowledgement of funding and copyright restraints), projects, faculty expertise, and industry affiliates. Develop associated reports, correspondence and contracts as needed.
Software development and maintenance: Design, implement, test, deploy and maintain various data and software systems in support of the Center's activities, such as "big data" management systems, data integration, regularization and management tools, machine learning systems, machine learning front-ends, databases and web-based front-ends to those databases.
Technical public relations: Direct the public relations program as determined by the Director and Executive Director. Plan, manage and coordinate various public relations efforts, including inside conferences, demonstrations and presentations at outside events, newsletters, brochures, and press releases. Initiate and design public relations materials, including the use of technical equipment and software. Represent the Center at outside events, such as Economic Development Seminars. Coordinate collaborative programs with campus, University and Commonwealth offices.
Industrial outreach: Direct and develop industrial outreach programs on behalf of the Center; implement collaborative projects and funding support with management and technical personnel of national and international high-tech corporations; develop and administer policies to serve Center industrial members. Plan and manage technical and advisory committee meetings, seminars and research review symposiums. Organize Center fund-raising efforts with industry.
Academic program management: Supervise/provide advice for students and prospective students regarding assigned program offerings and academic progress. Prepare and disseminate communications materials regarding programs. Partner with students, corporations and industry affiliates to leverage student talent into career opportunities.
Finances: Perform all procurement-related functions for the Center, from PRs to POs to subsequent receiving procedures, as a university-trained Purchaser with current UMass procurement software interfaces. Function as the official Records Manager for the Center ProCard Holders, maintaining auditable files and reporting directly to the controller's office. Perform funding reallocations for Center ProCards online in the UMass Finance System. Prepare Center travel pre-authorizations and prepare and process travel reimbursements for Center prospective and current employees.

Requirements:
Bachelor's degree in computer science, engineering or related field, plus at least 4 years of experience with software engineering and project management or Master's degree in the same plus 2 years of experience with software engineering and project management (preferred).
Ability to work with software systems on desktop, server and cloud systems.
Must have working knowledge of the technical and research landscape of Data Science, or ability to rapidly acquire this knowledge.
Superior interpersonal and communications skills and demonstrated ability to work both with individuals (a diverse clientele of faculty, staff, students and industry) and with various technologies.
Exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail.
Exceptional initiative and autonomy; ability to work productively and efficiently both individually and as a member of the Center for Data Science team. Ability to work independently and proactively and manage relevant priorities effectively.
Excellent ability to discern the need for confidentiality and professionalism.
Demonstrate willingness to learn new skills and material relevant to the Center for Data Science, and the unique structure of a university research center.
