[Hidden-tech] Recorder Needed

For what it's worth, if you're handy with multitrack audio software,
adventurous and have patience, in a pinch you *can* digitize four track
cassettes using a standard cassette player - tracks 1 and 2 are the left
and right channels of one side of the tape, and 3 and 4 are the other.
So...

 - Digitize side one, from beginning to end (so syncing up the timing is
easier)
 - Flip the tape and digitize side two (it will record backwards)
 - In software (Audacity is free and will do this), with tracks 3 and 4:
    - Reverse the entire waveform of each track
 - Then adjust the sample rate (without modifying the audio - just the
metadata) to be 2x what it is - if you sampled at 48khz, change it to 96k
 - Create a multitrack project with all of it, and slide the tracks around
around to sync up the timing

If that sounds like too much work, talk to Rusty Annis at Shoestring
Studios in Amherst - I'd bet he either has an old 4-track cassette deck
around or knows someone who does.

You also might be able to find a deck cheap on eBay.

Good luck,

Tim
