[Hidden-tech] DLink DNS-343 NAS device / Linux - how to set / change permissions...

Some important notes - and I'm making some assumptions here based on
experience with other NAS devices:

The filesystem on the drives is likely ext3 or ext4 - a native Linux
filesystem. That, plus perhaps the RAID configuration, would make you
unable to mount it to Windows.

The appliance is probably running Samba to act as a Windows share. In
the process, the permissions you're seeing in Windows are being
translated by that service and may not reflect the real ones on the
filesystem level.

Also, the folders in question may be protected by the server for some
reason. I have a Buffalo Linkstation that let me setup web and DB
services in a share and would then expose protected folders that I could
not delete over the network even after those services were moved
elsewhere or disabled.

Interestingly enough, try accessing it over FTP. FTP clients (e.g.
FileZilla) can change file permissions and may have a useful dialog box
that will break down the options in an understandable way.

The "real" way that you're asking about would be to access a command
shell over SSH using the Windows app PuTTY. There's a slim chance that's
an option on the appliance but would be great if available. From there
you should be able to use chmod as suggested.
