Yes, install Putty, which is a SSH client.  Then you would use Putty to log 
into the Linux machine, which should get you to a command line prompt 
(probably bash).

Question:  are all of the client machines running MS-Windows?  Are these the 
only machines that are having permission problems?  If so, then what your 
problem is how the MS-Windows sharing is implemented.  If the NAS box is 
running Linux, that probably means it is also running Samba, which is the 
Linux package that implememnts "NETBIOS" (MS-Windows file sharing).  Samba can 
be a tricky beast indeed.  There are all sorts of interesting issues with 
reguard to who exactly people, machines, etc. are.  Different ways of mapping 
between Linux "users" and MS-Windows "users".  And different authentication 
databases.  And mapping between things like user IDs and group IDs and then 
there are ACLs in the mix as well.

One sticky bit is if user A creates a file in some "shared" place, what allows 
user B read access to that file?  Linux and MS-Windows have completely 
different ideas on how to handle that sort of situation.  And different 
"tricks" to implement that sort of permission handling.
