I have a 'free' Netzero MiFi device.  Great for traveling, esp. to anyplace 
without available / free WiFi. (At home I have dial-up -- there is no cell 
coverage at my home.)

The downside is that the cost / byte for mobile Wifi, once you get beyond
relatively 'trivial' usage levels, is probably going to be an even worse hit on
the wallet. Also: Wifi bandwidth is always going to be limited vs. any sort of
'wired' option.
