[Hidden-tech] MS Access Questions

Hi Adrienne -

The immediate migration I cannot help with directly. My day job is working
on databases containing HIPAA data and I would not migrate HIPPA data until
the regulatory agencies tentatively OK'd the future cloud configuration and
security measures. That is a much more important and hazardous issue for
your company than the migration. The security is for the benefit of your
clients after all.

If the various HIPPA agencies like your current processes and use of
Access, well, OK for now. Access has almost no security and on your
desktop you could air gap it by disconnecting from the net. Moving Access
to the cloud opens you up to risk exponentially. Everyone has a shot at
the confidential HIPAA data. Unfortunately, HIPAA puts all the
responsibility on your head.

I think your first step is to contact the regulatory agencies and see if
they approve of your future configuration and security plan. If they like
it, then the migration issues are just technical things to be resolved.

If not, maybe they have some suggestions. Hidden Tech member can advise
you off-line (email is not sufficient) on sufficient security. The
problems will be mostly social, not technical. Migrating from Access to a
more secure DB like SQL Server is relatively easy. Getting everyone to
*accept* two-step authentication and the other fol-der-ol can be
intimidating.

Sincerely,
Doug
