You could also try to jailbreak it. If the iOS version on the phone is jailbreakable, you may be able to jailbreak without accessing the phone’s UI, at which point you could SSH into it and retrieve the pictures.

When plugged in, iTunes should be able to tell you the iOS version. From there, you could read the instructions for jailbreaking for that version. If the instructions do not mention unlocking the phone or interacting with it in any way during the process, this might be a viable option. It’s a big maybe, but it could be something to try if all else fails.
