She should focus on producing her e-books and selling them rather than waste her time trying to prevent unpaid use. Let the established distribution channels (iTunes, Kindle, etc.) handle that. It is trivially easy to remove DRM from all e-books, including those purchased on iTunes, so if someone really wants to steal your content, there is nothing you can do to prevent it. While closed distribution systems like iTunes, Adobe Digital Editions, Amazon Kindle, B&N Nook, Kobo and others cannot lock up your content, they do make it convenient for people to purchase and read it legally, and they prevent casual redistribution, as opposed to piracy. That is their great value to writers. Also, unless you have content that requires specific page image formatting (e.g., some textbooks and art books), pdf is a poor choice for distribution. It is even less secure than the epub/mobi formats used by the online booksellers, but more important, text cannot be adjusted to make it more readable on different screens. I buy a lot of e-books from Amazon and Barnes & Noble. I have no interest in redistributing any of them, but I always convert them to unprotected epub files for safekeeping and also to allow me to read them with my preferred e-book readers, Mantano Premium and Moon+ Reader Pro, both on Android devices. But the current versions of the Kindle and Nook readers for Android (and for PC) are good enough that I often use them anyway because they keep everything easily available and automatically synced across multiple devices and platforms. That alone is a good enough reason to buy books from those vendors rather than managing unlocked copies.
