Originally, bluetooth was developed to do just what you want. Example, a
secretary going thru a file cab could read folder titles to a voice
recognition system in a computer. (Secretary, file cab? Yes in 1998.)

First I would suggest if you couple borrow a couple similar Bluetooth
systems, just give it a try. Perhaps try one of the add-on units for use in
a car. Both ends have to transmit and receive.

The issue here is some Bluetooth units require software to get them going
and on the same channel.

Range might be a problem. Bluetooth is generally developed for 30 meters
over clear space.

Another way is to go to radio Shack and look at two GMRS units. (I may have
the acronym wrong). These units are built for private communications
between units operating in a small band above 450 MHz.

BUT, there are two uncompatable varieties. Both operate is nearby bands,
both do not require a license. Typically each unit costs about $30 You need
two for the same service. Range is on order of a half mile. They are also
often available at BJs, Target, Best Buy, etc.

Paint ball teams use these gadgets.

Then you need to see if they will work with your choice of earbuds
(probably), and your choice of microphone (here might be a rub).

I suggest you go to Radio Shack & see what they have. With a caution, do
some homework first, the folks at Radio Shack might know less than you do.
Your best bet would to be a complete kit of two units. After you find what
you need, then worry about cables and adaptors. Buying before night be a
waste of $$.

There are many, many sizes of plugs and adaptors. Everything is simple to
work with, you just need to get the right stuff.

Somewhere I saw a price you willing to pay. OUCH! Far, Far, Far too much!!

There is even another way. Requires an amateur radio license. NO code
required, sample exam on-line. There are Chinese-made hand held radios sell
for about $70 to $100 each. They are complete. Accessories that work with
them are available.
Range will be measured in miles, audio quality will be excellent, size will
be bit more than a thick pack of butts.

Look up universalradio.com (or is it universal-radio.com)? I recommend
them. They are a honest group of folks in Columbus, OH.
