Hi Marsha
I don't think you're going to be able to come up with a single perfect solution that will satisfy everybody, because everybody takes notes differently. But how about making a version that has an open vertical field, maybe an inch and a half wide, down one side of the page for notes. I thought of this because I know I tend to make short marginal notes when I study. If/when I run out of room I continue my thoughts on a separate page. Doing this would make your text would run to more pages because it would have to be narrower too, of course. But at least your student(s) would be able to put short notes alongside the relevant text as they read. If their notes are too long they won't all fit, but it should be enough for most people.
I'll be interested to hear what you decide to do, and how your students react.
