[Hidden-tech] OS X 10.9.4 software compatibility

There's huge variation in compatibility across the OS 10x series,
unfortunately. There were at least three system releases that they
should have numbered OS 11, 12, etc. Particularly big leaps from 10.4
to 10.5, 10.5 to 10.6.

My desktop computer runs 10.5.8. It still runs Eudora (yay!) but has
no competent browser (I have to use Firefox for Youtube or anything
with advanced Flash, which doesn't like this version of Chrome--and
Chrome for Facebook, which won't play at all nicely with this version
of Firefox. The desktop computer will not run the current MS Office,
and while I can open Office 2011 Word and Excel files, it will not
open a recent Powerpoint using SmartArt (such as what I presented for
your group at TEDx Shelburne Falls). And more and more websites AND
groupware/webinar platforms (GoToMeeting--Nyet; Google
Hangouts--depends on its mood) simply won't work on this
configuration. Sigh!

My stepfather's computer is just a few months older than mine, but
won't run anything past 10.4. It's almost like running system 9.

The laptop, only a year and a half old vs. about 5 years for the
desktop, started at OS 10.6 and is now running 10.8.9. To my utter
dismay, it never supported Eudora and won't run some other old stuff
too.

I'd suggest asking software manufacturers for compatibility assurance
before venturing forth. It's likely that you can't reverse it.
