Just noticed that some people using the obihai didn’t know this yet but: Recently Google announced the end of support for XMPP based calling with Google Voice. This will happen on May 15, 2014 – that’s over 6 months from today. Since your OBi device uses XMPP to communicate with Google servers, the end of support will directly impact how your OBi device can be used with your Gmail account and its associated Google Voice phone number. Unfortunately, you will no longer be able to use the Google Voice communication service to make calls using the phone connected to your OBi device. Also, the ability to receive calls to your Google Voice number, directly from Google’s service, will not be possible. Original Article Here: Obihai Announcement on Google Voice This change has nothing whatsoever to do with anyone's Google Voice number. It simply shuts off access to Google Voice via third-party XMPP clients. Your phone number will continue to work just like it does today. The service isn't shutting down. From my reading and understanding of it, they are simply trying to merge it with their “Hangouts” program/app and focusing on going that route, your phone number will still be there and work, just now you will either need a smartphone to use the number or a PC. Unfortunately I’m one of those users that will be affected by this change (along with most of you who have an obihai for this reason) and am now weighing in my options with the third party companies obihai supports. Really is too bad, the only reason I have the number/obihai device is to be able to use a fax machine. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, figured I’d inform those that hadn’t caught it yet. We have had our Belchertown phone (323-xxxx) for a number of years through Charter. We will have the new service with Comcast. Comcast is telling us they cannot retain our present phone number. Is this true? They did say we could retain some level of service with Charter and forward calls, which seems like a kluge-y option at best. I thought there was easy portability of phone numbers.
