There are advantages to a platform-native app, namely a presence in the app store and improved usability and overall performance. That said, a mobile web version can often quite useable and will let you prototype the design and functionality, usually for a fraction of the cost. Adobe's PhoneGap offers a compromise between the two that many find agreeable.
