A number of excellent comments were made about SSL and SEO on another thread. One person mentioned an inexpensive $9/yr certificate from Comodo. I've seen this price on Namecheap.com. They have other low cost SSLs, as well, including multi-domain and wildcard, which usually cost a LOT. You can get a completely free certificate from www.startssl.com, though you have to jump through some hoops. There was also discussion of the dedicated IP requirement. It is true that it is not a requirement for technical reasons any more. However, many shared hosting services will require a dedicated IP if you wish to use SSL.
