A cable is just wires running through a plastic conduit with passive 
connectors at each end, it doesn't sense anything.  CAT5 and CAT6 are 
just ratings for the highest speed the cable is guaranteed to support.

You might have a defective cable - try a different one to find out - if 
not, a CAT5 is not going to work any better than a CAT6.

Most recent routers and switches have auto sensing-ports that determine 
the transmit and receive lines and adjust automatically.  PC Ethernet 
ports are usually not auto-sensing. If the router is not sensing the 
correct lines, you might need a crossover cable to connect it to the PC.
