[Hidden-tech] Cable Router

Hi Maria,

You could try it..... it will only cost your time...
What type of signal does your wifi device advertise? G, B, N ?
Most likely, you won't get past 300' or maybe not close....
Keep in mind, the further away from the router..... you will have weaker signal... slower performance.
You may lose your connection before you get to the 300', or just can't stand the performance.
Plug it in, walk outside with your laptop, iPads, wifi device, see how far you go before you can't connect.
Although you won't have any obstructions... like in your house...walls, etc....
You have weather, BIG oak trees, or maybe soccer goal posts! That may affect the signal.

The basic wifi repeater / routers send their signal out in all directions ..... 360 degrees....
(Omnidirectional antennas distribute their signal equally in all directions)

You might want that will send / receive in a more defined path...
(directionally, meaning their radio signals can be focused in a specific direction)
You may need a router and wireless device in your house,
second wireless device in the barn (that talks to the wireless device in your house)
... for this to work.

I found this site, although there are plenty.
http://www.ampedwireless.com/products/ap600ex.html
It's says "signal to travel 1.5 miles..."..... if this is true, I will plug it in here and only charge you a minimal amount to use my network in your barn!

Let us know how it works.... If it works.

Donald --

Yes, it's line of sight, yes, there's power in the barn (but I don't know how it gets there -- electric pole?)... distance... hmm... about the size of a soccer field? I've seen ads for WiFi repeaters, but most of them seem to be designed to be used inside a house, not really weather-proof -- should I put one in an upstairs window, facing the barn?

Thanks!

-- Maria

Maria,

I know there are devices that can repeat the wifi signal....
You can either hard wire them together or connect them via wireless....
I am not sure of the distance though......
There are also "line-of-sight" wireless connections.... (like dish-2-dish kinda thing)
How far away will this repeater be from the main house where your router is?
Do you have electric power in the barn?
How does the electric get there? From the house?

There are ways to get that wireless signal pretty much anywhere!

I'm listening in, too -- I've got a large farm, and would love to be able to get WiFi outside, even out at the barn. Maybe a WiFi repeater?

Hi Carey,

There is a "ton" of knowledge here..... for sure..

If you have a moment, can you let us all know what you ended up doing and how well it works .... or not.

Believe it or not, your results is as valuable as the knowledge you received...

I myself always wonder how things turn out....

Have a Great One!
