[Hidden-tech] Cable Router

You don’t want their router OR their cable modem.

I believe Comcast charges $8/mo. for a modem, which means that buying a
Motorola Surfboard SB6141 for $90 on Amazon will pay for itself in less
than a year, and is almost certainly better than whatever they would
provide you with. A separate router is much preferable to one combined
with a modem for many reasons, including reliability, performance and
flexibility.

I have an ASUS RT-N66U (the predecessor to the RT-AC66U) which is
located on the second floor of my house and has excellent signal in the
basement and outside the far side of the house. I have several computers
and 6-8 Android devices, plus a Yamaha HT receiver running off it, with
no delays streaming Netflix or Internet radio programs. I have several
more computers connected to it by wired Ethernet.

Wired throughput is much better for data transfers than even the best
wireless connections, so one should locate the router where as many
computers as possible can be connected with Gigabit Ethernet, saving the
maximum amount of WiFi bandwidth for mobile and streaming media devices.

The router connects to the cable modem by Ethernet, so it can be placed
pretty far from where cable comes into the house. This lets you choose a
location that provides the best combination of wired and wireless
connectivity. Another reason for avoiding a combined modem/router.

One router feature that is important to me, but others might not care
about, is multiple SSID support. This allows me to run two separate
wireless networks over one router, a private one protected by a strong
password, and another available to guests with a simple password.
