After the cable modem, you can use more than one WIFI router for coverage. If you assign all of them the same SSID and password, your devices will tend to choose the one with the strongest signal as you move through the house. That's what I did in my modest ranch - the two wireless routers are in the basement, one at the end, one in the middle (because it is just physically convenient) and I have a strong signal everywhere. Previously the signal was kinda pooky in spots. New routers with 802.11ac have the fastest speed, theoretically 3x faster than the previous 802.11g, assuming your devices have that ac capability. (You can buy ac dongles for the devices.) More importantly, some ac routers have the ability to shape the signal to "aim" for the target device, to direct a stronger signal to the device. You gotta run at least one wire through the house to daisy-chain the routers.
