[Hidden-tech] Direct TV

At this point my information is out of date so be sure to verify, but what I remember is that the "plain" box, which doesn't have recording capability, comes with the installation. You pay extra for the ability to record one or two programs at once (or record one while you watch something else) and you can program the DVR to record shows on a daily or weekly schedule or by clicking on the schedule listing. I think that if you want to have the direcTV service to more than one television you have to have each one hooked up separately. Each additional TV, with one of the non-recording boxes, adds about $5 to the monthly cost. Having more than one DVR in the house is more expensive.
The most offensive part about my experience with DirecTV is the way they held the timeline of my contract over my head. They always made sure I knew they weren't going to allow me to vacate my contract, no matter how badly they were screwing up. But, as I said before, I don't know of anyone who had as bad an experience with them as I did.
I think you have to figure out how much you really watch your TV and what you're willing to pay for. I disconnected from DirecTV at the end of a baseball season and discovered that, other than the Red Sox, I didn't miss it at all. I watch lots of television programming on my computer and/or ipad and take lots of movies out of the library. I keep thinking that when I get bored with what's available for free online I'll get the paid version of Hulu, or something like it. But it's been a while, I'm still not bored, and I still don't miss it.
	For whatever that's worth.
	Lynne
