FWIW, I've been test-driving DigitalOcean for a couple of sites (this is one - http://timboudreau.com/builds/ ) and I've had nary a hiccup - just set up a new Debian server with them last night. Hard to beat their prices, and so far the results have been great. If all you need is a generic unix box, a more pricey but rock-solid stable option is joyent.com - the OS is a variant of Solaris (since I used to work for Sun, this is a plus in my book - they do have linux and windows offerings too if you must) with pretty much anything you could want available via the pkgin tool. In particular, the I/O throughput is much more dependable than my experiences with Amazon EC2. I host the rest of http://timboudreau.com there.
