[Hidden-tech] IT tax coming -- did you know ?

Yes, this tax is a pretty ill-conceived concept by knuckleheads in Boston (including the governor’s office) who are desperate to generate revenues however possible. Unfortunately, other states will probably all follow suit. Unless you are running a sole proprietorship with no employees, you should already have a business account setup with the DOR for the payment of payroll taxes as well as sales tax (which is due by the 20th of the following month). If you need to create an account, go to the following address and click on the “register” link in the upper left of the page:
https://wfb.dor.state.ma.us/webfile/business/public/webforms/login/login.aspx

My interpretation is that most (if not all) services that have previously been non-taxable will now be taxable, but only for clients who are physically located in Massachusetts. Work for clients in other states should still be considered “exempt sales” from a sales tax perspective.

Of course, those are my personal opinions and interpretations. People should contact a qualified tax accountant if they are uncertain.

** Be sure to fill out the survey/skills inventory in the member's area.
** If you did, we all thank you.

Does anyone know how I can get a sales tax ID? I've been in business
for 12 year but haven't sold anything except my computer services so I
haven't gotten a sales tax ID before. If I'm supposed to start
collecting taxes next week, I am not even set up for that. Is this a
simple process or something I have to get lawyer to set up? :-P

I assume non-profits are exempt from this tax still? Most of my work is
for non-profits. Don't I have to get a tax exempt form from them? What
do I do with it, send it to the state?

Damn state!

Thanks,
David
