[Hidden-tech] Disclaimers on sites

Disclaimers are important, esp. on blogs, so that the blogger doesn't get busted by the FTC for not informing the public about the advertising.

For instance, if a blogger runs particular kinds of affiliate programs, the blogger could say that he/she does not endorse the products and is only advertising them.  

If the adverts are for your own product, then you don't need a disclaimer.  it's a given that you're promoting your own products and know about them.

Disclaimers are also important if a blogger is writing a post about a product and has never used the product.  Then, the blogger has to state that what they are writing is a "sponsored blog post."  This is another FTC reg.  

you might want to look at the FTC rulings/warnings/recommendations about blogs, blogging and endorsements.  They may have something on affiliate programs too (although I'm not sure.)  the FTC info's pretty clear and easy to understand.

What is your take on Disclaimers specifically in reference to a site that uses Affiliate programs? Do you think it is necessary? Not needed? Better to be cautious?

I might be wrong but it seems to me that smaller blogs have them and larger ones dont because, well, its just doing business and to be expected.

Thoughts?
