There are two types of *digital* video tapes the older 8mm (Sony calls it
Digital8), and the newer 4mm tapes. The Digital8 are the same as Hi8 (analog
video). 8mm tapes are roughly the same size as standard audio cassettes. The
4mm are about the size of mini-cassettes. Sony's early Firewire camcorders
used Digital8 media and the newer ones use 4mm tapes. Both formats are
digital. Sony's Digital8 camcorders can play Hi8 tapes. Hi8 (older 8mm video
tapes) are analog video and digital audio. Sony's Digital8 camcorders can
digitize 'on-th-fly' Hi8 videos and feed the digital data out through the
firewire port.
