[Hidden-tech] Taking advertising on a blog

Although I cannot answer the substantive question as Will Klass does, the question of whether advertising compromises the objectivity (or appearance thereof) of the blog is an appropriate one to ask. In my opinion, you'll be on safe grounds if the advertisers do not see the editorial prior to their ad appearing, and the blog contains a disclaimer to that effect.

The question of whether advertising impacts the writer's objectivity (i.e., might the writer favor an advertiser, or blog more about topics that pertain to categories of products being advertised) has been with us forever, and will be. Only the writer can answer that (and, indeed, many writers cannot answer it, because the effect can be subtle).

  Hi Susanna,

I blog for my full time job. So there is certainly money to be made in it (although, as my bank account can confirm, not THAT much money).

Success at advertising is half based on having lots of traffic and half based on having the sorts of ads that your blog visitors will click on. Not having a sense of your readership, I'm not sure where you are on the latter. But from what I can see, it doesn't seem to me like your blog has enough visitors to make ads worth while. Instead of working with Google adsense or some firm like that, my suggestion would be to find one company or one product that fits your subject matter and that you really believe in and work out an advertising/sponsorship deal directly with them.

Good luck. Feel free to write back with any questions,

     Wil

In the last few days, my husband has received several requests to accept advertising on his blog www.JoyfulDiabetic.com. Should he or shouldn't he? Does taking advertising compromise the value of the blog? Is there any real money to be made out of this or is he selling his soul to the devil for pennies? If he decides to accept the offer, what should he watch out for?

    As always, many thanks,

    --Susanna
