[Hidden-tech] New vs. recycled toner cartridges?

I have a Brother 5250dn. Several years ago I started buying the 10,000
sheet cartridge. It's cost isn't that much more compared to the std 3500
sheet unit. Perhaps your printer has that option.

Before the Brother printer, I used an HP 3P. Bought in 1991 or 1992, and
perhaps still works. From a year or so after acquiring that machine I
started refilling my own carts. Not an easy chore, but time efficient if
done in batches of 5 or 6.

I found a site that sold toner at a reasonable price.

The one thing that I learned from that venture is not all toner works in
every machine. Toner for the 2P and 3P series is specific to those HP
machines. So I can understand that off-brand toner rebuilds might be junk.
It costs $$ to stock different toners.

I have a friend that was in the ink-jet cart rebuilding business. For some
understandable reason, his sales took a dive just before the business cycle
peaked around 2006. Guess folks had too much $$. Perhaps the buy-back
programs for the used carts also have an impact. It is difficult to rebuild
carts that you can't get, so with few folks looking for rebuilds, the
market vanishes.

Today, would I buy a rebuilt laser cart? No.

Hi,

I need to replace the toner cartridge in my laser printer soon. For a
while now, I've been buying the brand name cartridges, because I had
problems with recycled cartridges in the past (the gears skipped, and
it may have done damage to a previous printer)

But now, it's been years since buying recycled and I'd like to
consider it again. I would like feedback from folks as to whether the
quality is better on recycled these days. The lesser impact on the
environment is in alignment with my values, and the lower price is an
incentive, too.

My printer is a Brother HL-2040 (and I adore it!), the cartridge is
the TN 350, and the prices I've gotten so far are:
Ink & Toner Solutions (Northampton) recycled toner cartridge: $45.99
Staples: new, $65.49 (free shipping)
($19.50 difference)

If recycled is recommended, I'd love to hear thoughts on Ink and Toner
Solutions and/or any one else you buy from.

Thanks,
Deb
