IIRC Sprint has the OEMs remove support for tethering from their builds of Android, so this approach doesn't work if you've got a stock Sprint phone. I've also heard that HTC tends to disable tethering across all carriers, but can't confirm (I've been a Samsung loyalist). If you've roooted a (non-Sprint) phone, you can enable tethering without the carrier necessarily knowing about it (I suspect that Android doesn't e.g. manipulate TCP sequence numbers or play around with TTL; this means that a carrier could do packet analysis to discover that you're tethering and send you a nastygram. If you're on Sprint, you'll probably have to install a new build of Android (it's mostly free/libre open source, after all) like CyanogenMod (this will probably void the warranty, though) There's also an app in the Play Store (fka Android Market) called FoxFi. It doesn't work on Sprint or on HTC phones, but it doesn't require any of the above steps. Enabling tethering becomes: start FoxFi, set your network name and password and check Activate Hotspot. That should get a new WiFi network to show up on your netbook: connect to it as you'd connect to any other wireless lan.
