[Hidden-tech] Puzzle for HT SEO experts

Thanks Rob,

Something to consider is that setting up subdomain DNS records on many DNS
providers will disclose those subdomains to anyone requesting a zone
transfer, meaning that those subdomain names are not private and they will
be found by the search engines and by others with less charitable reasons
for probing. If you control the DNS yourself it can be configured to deny
zone transfer requests, which can help keep your
"MyPrivateStagingSubdomain.mydomain.com" stating area more private. You
can also set up a robots.txt file to disallow indexing for all, which seems
to have worked with google , bing, and yahoo when I have used it on staging
sites to keep those sites from being search indexed.

Bottom line is that there are a number of ways in which your own efforts can
be counterproductive to search engine results, so it is worth doing some
review for important search keywords to find references to staging sites or
unintended keyword results, or if you have seasonal content that gets
replaced, to check to make sure you don't lose the search links. Once items
get into search engines, they can stay for a long time even if the links no
longer work as intended. Finding those dead or incorrect links and
redirecting them to appropriate locations & fixing the typos will help you
both with search engines and with directing people to the right places.

Old and staging sites often stay in search engine indexes, for various
reasons. One should write page-to-page 301 redirects from old to new pages
and also wildcard redirects that take care of any expired or staging pages.
Both types of redirects can involve coding that prevents having to do manual
redirects for each page. Also, one should write 301 redirect code that
reconnects any inbound links and their PageRank to expired pages. Then one
should update the xml sitemap. There's more one can do to implement PageRank
sculpting (which is not the justly discredited nofollow tag sculpting), and
when my article on PageRank sculpting is published in the next Visibility
Magazine, I email a link to it.

Technical SEO, as opposed to keywording text, is most of what SEO consists
of these days, at least for larger websites. It's reaching a point of
complexity that, sadly, ever larger small businesses can't afford to do
right, and at the same time Google, especially after its major Panda and
Penguin updates, is making adherence to rules of technical SEO more
essential. The silver lining is that, since few do it right or thoroughly,
this creates opportunity to exceed competition, and once implemented, it
endures for years if not screwed up subsequently.

systems that block legitimate email too. Important emails should be followed
up with a phone call if no reply happens within an expected span of time.

I'm not an SEO expert, but I think Google is looking at the old or
Hidden-Tech test site. Someone was talking with me and thought our
Hidden-Tech.net site was down, but she had actually been looking at our old
or test site. I've encountered the same problem with my Wordpress test site.
My web host wants to update it when there is a Wordpress update, and I think
I've taken it down but somehow it still exists. I look forward to other
comments. Cheers, Claudia

Hi,

The description of your site that turns up in a Google search spells
"technology" as "technolgy" and "videographers" as "videographiers." I am
not a spelling Nazi or anything, but since this is a business/
professional-oriented website, I thought you would want to know!

Have a great summer,
