While this can be done, often times when you reply, it'll show the message as sent from lynne at gmail on behalf of lynne at verizon. This is far from elegant. You could receive from gmail and then send through Verizon, which will allow you to sync your Verizon inbox across devices, but then sent messages would still be POP and thus stored locally. I believe gmail has a feature to send from another mail server but it a) is not always applicable, b) will sometimes anger spam filters, and c) if the email is examined closely, you'll still see gmail in the header information. I could be mistaken but I don't believe Verizon supports IMAP. Many ISPs opt out of this technology due to space constraints. However, I do agree it is much better.
