Hi Ted -
PayPal may meet your needs. It is a good place to start and try ecommerce.
  It is "free" except for the usual percent charge and per transaction fee.

good:
Wordpress has a shopping cart just for Paypal
has no monthly charge.
percent charge and per transaction fee is not exorbitant

bad:
IMO, the checkout is bumpy and keeps putting the brand "Paypal" in front of
the customer
