At least with iPhones, Apple seems to have an unwritten policy that they will do a one-time ³courtesy² exchange for a broken screen. We had this happen this summer when a two-week old iPhone fell 3 feet to asphalt pavement and shattered (though the phone itself still worked). I¹ve heard this story from enough other people to think that it is pretty common. They seem to offer it to you when you come in to ask about repair or replacement cost (after checking to see if they¹ve already replaced it before I think). Whether they will do the same for an iPad is uncertain, but it¹s certainly worth a shot. Have your friend put on her best sad, puppy dog face and head down to Holyoke with her busted screen to see what they¹ll do. And, do what my wife did, which is to buy a very robust case such as those by Otterbox: http://www.otterbox.com/ipad-2-cases/ipad-2-cases,default,sc.html My wife¹s iPhone has easily survived other falls with the Otterbox iPhone case.
