Yes, the toner cartridge CAN definitely make a difference, but that is 
not necessarily your problem.

You have an entry-level printer that is least 6 years old and any number 
of things could have outlived their life-expectancy.  It's simply not 
worth the money to repair it or replace worn out parts.

You can get a Brother HL-22700DW, which is about the same size, faster, 
with duplex printing and wireless networking built in, for about $100 
these days, and they sometimes go on sale for $80.
