Hmmm... I would check /etc/my.cnf and also make sure the version of
Magento you have installed (or its config file) *matches* the version
of MySQL you have installed. Oh, and make sure things are consistent
WRT the distro things are insalled on and built for. It can be wonky
to install a Debian-built Magento on a RHEL/CentOS system, etc. Even
if things were built on the right sort of system, you need to be sure
that the configuration files agree about the location of files/sockets,
port numbers, UIDs/GIDs, etc.
Oh, I presume that you already checked that MySQL is in fact running AND
that the authentication is corrent (username, password, database name,
etc.).
