I don't know this version of Word, but I have solved similar problems by doing Save As into RTF, under a new name, and then opening. Also try deleting the last character of the document and then doing Save As (or copying everything but the last character)--because Word stores a lot of document info in the hidden character just after the last character. Just keep renaming every time, so you can easily revert if you don't like the results.
