[Hidden-tech] Online Backup Revisited

I've been considering Crash Plan as well. They received top marks from Macworld.

Is anyone running two different online backup systems? Call me paranoid, but I'm considering it.

For a limited time, as a loss leader, they offered unlimited online backup for $30, which moved to $60 shortly thereafter, as they said it would. However, when looking at this system yesterday, they’ve moved to a less attractive three tiered system:

This makes Carbonite a whole lot more attractive at $55 per year for unlimited backups. Of course a backup is only as good as its restore, so you have to keep an eye on whatever you wind up doing (for the record, I had my laptop stolen a couple of years ago and was able to recover the whole thing via Carbonite).

Besides some interesting features (backing up to a friend’s offsite computer, for example), they also offer an unlimited multiple machine subscription (between 2 to 10 machines) for $120 per year. This is very attractive for anyone with three or more machines that they want to back up.
