[Hidden-tech] Online Backup Revisited

Some discussions have been focusing on online backup systems recently with
the value of Trend Micro's system being touted. For a limited time, as a
loss leader, they offered unlimited online backup for $30, which moved to
$60 shortly thereafter, as they said it would. However, when looking at
this system yesterday, they've moved to a less attractive three tiered
system:

20GB for $40

50GB for $90

100GB for $150

While there are some attractive features of this system, I would have to say
that it gets pretty pricey on a per-machine basis. This makes Carbonite a
whole lot more attractive at $55 per year for unlimited backups. Of course
a backup is only as good as its restore, so you have to keep an eye on
whatever you wind up doing (for the record, I had my laptop stolen a couple
of years ago and was able to recover the whole thing via Carbonite).

I have also found another online backup system that I'm running on trial
right now called CrashPlan <http://www.crashplan.com/> that offers both a
limited free service (it looks as though it's mostly a local backup) as well
as both a limited (10GB for $25) and an unlimited paid service ($50 per
year). Besides some interesting features (backing up to a friend's offsite
computer, for example), they also offer an unlimited multiple machine
subscription (between 2 to 10 machines) for $120 per year. This is very
attractive for anyone with three or more machines that they want to back up.

I just thought I'd follow up with this, as it's been a "hot topic" for some
time now.

Thanks,

Frank
