Donna,

there's a great app for the iPhone that i use called bluefire by the folks who make blue microphones. they also make a mic called "Mikey" that attaches to the iPhone. I'd highly recommend it. works beautifully and you can transfer files via wifi fairly easily to your MacBook. 

I've recorded some great concerts, my kids classroom projects, speeches professional interviews, coyotes howling, etc. with very little noise.
