HI Scott -- I am currently sharing my wifi with my tenant's daughter downstairs who has one computer. The only set-up involved was to give her the password. I have verizon dsl through my land-line and have never noticed any effect on my speed etc. from her usage. Verizon isn't perfect, but that's another topic. Sharing the wifi works really well. I would imagine that your friend would need to make sure that the apartment building isn't constructed in such a way that would block the signal. I am able to take my cordless phone downstairs into my tenant's apartment and don't lose signal, so maybe that's something they could try before investing in the wifi.
