[Hidden-tech] Microsoft.NET & Silverlight -- if a PC user, not a developer, are they needed to run System 7?

David,

To give some more background on why you may or may not want to uninstall
these, I thought it might help to give some discussion of what they are.

.NET

.NET is an application framework. I, as a developer, can write an
application using the .NET framework. If you then want to use this
application on your computer, you would need to have the .NET framework
installed on your computer. If you are familiar with a Java Virtual
Machine, the .NET framework is the same idea. As far as Windows 7 is
concerned, I want to say that some of the software that comes with the
system may be written in it and require it to be installed. I believe the
reason that it is listed separately in the lists of software is that there
may be other versions that come out that can be installed separately from
the system, but in general I do not think it is expected that users will
remove it.

Silverlight

Think Flash. That's about it. It can be used for desktop applications, but
for the most part it is used to run Flash-like animations/applications/video
players on web pages. If you see something that looks like Flash on
Microsoft.com it will be Silverlight. If you do not have it installed and
you go to a web page with a Silverlight component, it may prompt you to
download and install Silverlight.

Hope that helps. In general I would recommend not bothering to uninstall
either of them unless you have a specific reason to do so. They're pretty
integral to Microsoft's consumer software plans.
