[Hidden-tech] Database program suggestions for printed/online resource guide

Why not have everyone enter the data into tables, such as Word/Excel, then
combine them at one spot? Rich is right that there are too many unknowns in
your request. If you want someone to be able to enter data continuously
that is different from a one-time collection. Do you want on-line entry or
submitted files?

I am not a fan of mixed environments for preparing final documents. I have
been burned too many times by "nearly compatible" formatting. I would think
of this as a two part process, as I said above. Spend the money getting it
collated and formatted at the end, not during the process.

There are a missing pieces of information in your request:

    1) How much data are we talking about ? how many entries, how many
    sections

    2) How searchable/organized does the web site/printed version need
    to be ?

    3) What is your web site based on ?

There are many options, some even open source - such as open
    office/Base or

    for a small fee: http://quickbase.intuit.com/

another is Filemaker that has many local and web options including
    iPad/iPhone.

The web sites based on a CMS like joomla or Drupal, have extensions
    that provide such services,

    such as Sobi2.

It would help to have a fair bit more info -- you can also look at
the HT list for prior discussions

    on this topic: http://www.hidden-tech.net/lists/search.html

There are so many options, I'd see what answers you get here and
then get a consultant to sort

    them out for you.

      Dear Hidden Techers,

Happy Spring! Finally, some flowers and buds...

I am working on a project with a group of about 8 people,
gathering data about community resources, which will then be
put into a printed resource guide as well as an online guide
(on an existing website, with an existing (blank) structure
in place) There will be 3-4 of us entering data, all at
different locations. I am the only one using a Mac, everyone
else is using a PC. One person is using Linux.

Then, I will be creating a printed guide on my Mac, using
            this data.

So, the question is: What database program should we use to
input the data, which is fully searchable, and has the
option of sections being rearranged and which can then allow
me to pull this data to put it into a printed guide.

The people working on this project range from fairly tech
            savvy to novices.

We have a budget to purchase software, and if needed, we
could consider hiring a consultant to help us use it.

Thanks, I would love to bring this info to a meeting early
            tomorrow afternoon.
