I assume you are using Word. The answer is, unfortunately, not really. You
can set Word to create .WBK (backup files) each time you save a document,
but you end up with double the amount of your files. Word 2010 claims that
"previous versions will be available for a short time" and also lets you
specifically save a previous version. The autorecover files might be
helpful, but you have to crash out of Word to access them. (Shut off your
computer with Word open. Not recommended.) Earlier versions of Word allowed
a "QuickSave" option that did not erase your changes. You could open the
Word Document in Notepad and root around for deleted information in that
case.

 

Aside from that, if the user has network or computer backup, there may be
another copy that can be restored.

 

And finally, there may be other copies in other folders or on memory sticks.


 

Otherwise, it's re-type city.

 

Going forward, look at the File New dialog box. There is an option, New From
Existing, that will open a copy of any file as a separate file. This is
useful for documents that you use often and edit for different users, etc.
(i.e. a letter that you send to different people on a regular basis.) If you
do this, you never accidentally save over an earlier copy.
