Maybe it's just me, but we tried for almost a year to use SugarCRM and make it work for our business. We've since switched to Batchbook and been extremely happy. Obviously it can't be completely customized, but it has a ton of integration and can be customized for a lot of things. Sugar was always just very clunky on the things that mattered most, like working on clients/customers. Just my 2 cents, I say look for other solutions before wasting time trying to make Sugar fit your needs because in the long run the system itself is flat.
